What are Essential Oils?

Essential Oils contain the natural elements that give plants their "essence".  When these essences are
extracted from a plant, they become an essential oil with a unique composition that affects how it smells,
how it is absorbed and how it is used by the body.  For an article on Essential Oils 101 or to shop for the
highest quality essential oils, go here.

Essential Oils are obtained from plants including flowers, leaves, roots, barks and peels.  They are very aromatic and each different oil has therapeutic values specific to the particular plant or plant part used.  The oils are extracted in one of three processes - steam distillation, cold pressing or CO2 extraction.

Essential oils are not "oily"!  They evaporate quickly, with the rest being absorbed into the body.  Though some companies sell plant extracts that are labeled "essential oils", a true essential oil is extracted without the use of any chemical solvents.  I mention this only because when we discuss therapeutic value, those oils that are not truly essential oils may have no therapeutic value at all.  Remember that these oils pass deeply into the cells, tissues, organs and bloodstream, so purity is a must.  I am a proponent of the belief that what we absorb through our skin can be as potent as what we ingest, in either a positive or negative manner.

Essential oils can be used topically, through inhalation, or by ingestion.

Please do not ingest ANY essential oils without ensuring that they are made for consumption.  See "More Info - About Essential Oils" here.    I trust the oils I use enough to use them on my closest family.  We put lemon essential oil in our water (a great antioxidant) and we cook with cilantro and lime essential oils, just as a few examples.  We use peppermint essential oil to eliminate hiccups, and ginger essential oil for a family member's acid reflux.  But I wouldn't allow my family to ingest any essential oils if I am not 100% confident in the purity.

Regarding inhalation, I don't use any aerosols because of the man-made chemical content; nor would I use a "pure therapeutic grade essential oil" that I am not 100% sure of.  Once you have a pure therapeutic grade essential oil that you fully trust, diffusing is wonderful aromatically and can provide many benefits for mood and other issues.

Some essential oils are not safe for pets, including use in diffusion.  Please be careful when using essential oils around pets, babies, children, or if you are pregnant or nursing a baby.

Essential oils are comprised of the plant's "essence".  These essences are made up of beneficial compounds that can support health in a great number of ways.

How are essential oils used by Villa Lake Holistic Wellness LLC?

I use essential oils in Aromatherapy Touch sessions for adults, children, babies and pets.  I also use essential oils in Villa Lake Naturals products.  Essential oils can also be combined with Reiki and Holistic Life Coaching.  In Aromatherapy Touch, there are eight specific essential oils that I use to simulate various systems, and then I choose one or two additional essential oils based on my client's specific needs.  For example, a client may feel a great deal of stress or anxiety, or may have a stomach issue or a headache.  I would choose essential oils to reduce the effects of those specific issues based on their therapeutic values.

Let's look at Cardamom Essential Oil as an example:  It is considered an anti-spasmodic, and it can neutralize the adverse effects of chemotherapy and reduce nausea. It is used as an antiseptic, anti-microbial, aphrodisiac, astringent, digestive, stomachic, stimulant, and diuretic agent.  Regarding health benefits, it has been known to cure spasms, fight nausea, protect wounds and incisions, curb microbial growth, increase libido, contract gums, promote digestion, and maintain stomach health. It stimulates secretions and other functions, increases urination and thereby removes extra salt, bile, water, toxins and fat from the body.

When I use essential oils in my natural products, I am not concocting a perfume or a perfumed product.  For therapeutic value I use essential oils that are of the highest quality.  I don't use any synthetic fragrance oils - the few fragrance oils I use are all natural and of course, they are not used in place of essential oils when therapeutic value is needed.  I choose the essential oils based on the intent of the product and the therapeutic values of the oils on the skin.  Fortunately, most essential oils have a fabulous scent.  I also base my essential oil and ingredient choices on safety for the group for which the product is made.  Some particular essential oils are not to be used in products for babies, children, pets, pregnant or nursing mothers, etc.  I also take these factors into consideration.  The percentage of oil to other ingredients in a product also depends on who is going to use it.  For example, the percentage of essential oil in a product for a baby, such as Natural Baby Massage Oil, will be lower than the percentage of essential oil in a product for an adult or older child, such as Natural Massage Oil.

I use essential oils of the highest degree of potency and purity.  Again, they are the oils I choose for my very own family.  I am highly skilled at matching a client's needs with the appropriate essential oils to be used in the appropriate manner.  I am a Certified Essential Oils Coach - more on that below.
